Taiwan’s bicycle industry sees increased exports in terms of both value and volume

Taiwan’s bicycle and bicycles components exports increased by a huge 16.2%, reaching just over 3 million units for the first three quarters of 2015, compared to 2.65 million for the same period a year previously. Statistics from the TBA (Taiwan Bicycle Association) show that the industry appears to be recovering after the previous few years, which have seen exports fall. This upturn has been seen in terms of both volume and value, with the Jan-Sep period for 2015 totalling 1.27 billion Euro, a 15.3% increase. Besides mainland China, all main markets imported significantly more bicycles from Taiwan in this period.

The Chinese market for Taiwanese bicycles declined by 33% to 79,000 units. Though not yet that large, the Chinese market was seen as a main growth market for several years. This development has now stopped due to the economic decline in China. The US still represents the biggest single market for Taiwan made bicycles with 570,000 units between January and September this year, an increase of 26.3%. Export to the UK surged by 26.8% to 552,000 units and to the Netherlands by 17.3% to 316,000 bicycles. Next to bicycles, total bicycle components export also expanded by 7.01% reaching a value of 723 million euro.

 

TBA chairman and Giant Global Group CEO Anthony Lo pointed out “We see a significant increase in the number of people and countries where people start cycling for sports, leisure and to commute,” at the presentation of the industry sales statistics. He went on to state “The average unit price of Taiwan made bicycles went down only slightly by 0.8% to 411 euro. The average export price for MTBs is now 618 euro and for road race 628 euro.” Mr Lo also highlighted the importance of the cycling experience to get more people cycling. “As bicycle industry we are proud that we are also exporting the cycling experience today. The Velocity conference which will take place in Taipei just before the Taipei Cycle Show is a fine example. Taiwan converted from a cycling island to a cycling paradise. Only ten years ago people called Taiwan the cycling desert.
